Meridian Energy is New Zealand’s largest electricity generator. It owns and operates around 35% of New Zealand’s total electricity generation capacity.
Meridian's generation is 100% from renewable sources, particularly hydroelectric power and wind energy, making it one of the leading contributors to New Zealand's renewable energy targets.
The New Zealand government holds a majority stake of 51% in Meridian. The remainder is publicly listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) and is owned by private investors, both institutional and individual.
Meridian supplies electricity to homes, businesses and farms across New Zealand and has offices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Twizel.
Meridian customers have access to discounts with partnering businesses:
- Ecostore: 15% off ecostore branded products online
- OEM Audio: 10% discount on EV accessories.
Meridian offers electricity only.
Meridian has a solar buy-back rate of 17¢/kWh plus a $300 credit with a 5-year fixed-rate solar plan. All other plans offer a buy-back rate of 12c/kWh.
Billing
Meridian offers several ways to access billing information:
- Online (via a ‘MyMeridian’ Account)
- Meridian mobile app
- Paper bills (you may be charged a small fee for paper billing).
Payment options
- Direct debit (Set up automatic payments directly from your bank account. Your bill amount is automatically deducted on the due date.)
- Credit/debit card (Some card payments may incur a small fee.)
- Internet banking
- In person at NZ Post
- Phone payment
- Meridian mobile app
- Level pay (Pay a regular set amount each time, with regular checks to ensure the amount being paid aligns with your energy use.)
- Alternative payment arrangements. If you're having trouble paying, you can discuss payment plan options with Meridian to spread the cost over time.

Mobile app
The Meridian mobile app is available for customers to download through the Apple App or Google Play stores. Customers can view their usage and bills and manage their account information, along with finding helpful tips on how to conserve energy and save money.
Complaints
If you have a complaint, get in contact with the Meridian customer service team. Where the customer service team is unable to resolve your complaint, it will be passed to the in-house complaint resolution process team, who will work with you to come to a fair and reasonable resolution.

Vulnerable and medically dependent customers
Meridian will not disconnect the power supply for unpaid bills for customers who have been verified as medically dependent.

Meridian is driven to accelerate decarbonisation across New Zealand and wants to help others do the same. Specifically, it aims to help community groups across Aotearoa reduce their carbon emissions through its Community Decarbonisation Fund.
Meridian is passionate about electric vehicles. It’s building one of New Zealand’s largest EV charging networks, Zero.
