Powershop

Powershop New Zealand is an online electricity retailer that provides energy services to residential and business customers across the country. Founded in 2009, the company offers a digital platform where consumers can manage their electricity usage, track consumption in real time and purchase power in a flexible way. Powershop operates under a model that emphasizes transparency and customer control, allowing users to select and purchase of Powerpacks.  

Powershop does not have fixed-term contracts. There are no exit fees. Powershop are a good option for households that want total flexibility. 

As part of Meridian Energy, Powershop plays a role in New Zealand's wider electricity sector, supplying power that is generated predominantly from renewable sources such as wind and hydroelectricity. 

Powershop has been awarded five (in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024) Consumer NZ People's Choice awards.

New customers 

Powershop offers new customers a $150 credit, applied to their first 12 months. For more details, see the Powershop $150 Credit terms and conditions webpage.  

Staying power 

Powershop customers are eligible for a loyalty discount called Staying Power. The discount starts at 20% for new customers and increases by 1% every year, to a maximum of 25% off after five years. For more details, see the Powershop Staying Power webpage. 

Switch your mates 

Powershop customers receive $100 power credit for every friend or family member successfully referred to Powershop through their Switch Your Mates promotion. The friend or family member will also get the Powershop sign-up offer of either $150 free credit or 12 free weekends, both over a year, when they sign up. Electricity only.

Powershop customers receive their bills via email or online.

Powershop will happily work with you to resolve any issue quickly. Either:

Vulnerable and medically dependent customers 

Powershop will not disconnect the power supply for unpaid bills for customers who have been verified as medically dependent.

Powershop’s customers can access their electricity usage data: 

• through the Powershop app 
• by contacting Powershop staff Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, through the chat function on the Powershop website 
• by emailing [email protected].  

You can request up to the last 24 months of your electricity usage data if you’ve been with Powershop for this amount of time. Otherwise, you’ll need to contact your previous retailer for your usage data for the period when you weren’t a Powershop customer.  

You can ask for either a summarised or detailed report.
